In Louisiana in the early 1800s, there are strict laws in place concerning the marriage of a woman of mixed blood. Aurelie understands what is required of her but she feels trapped. She is now married to Jordan Kincaid, a wealthy planter. He is kind to her but he has so many secrets. What is he hiding? I enjoyed this historical romance set in the bayous of Louisiana where pirates roam and the British and the United States prepare for war. The characters caught me in their spell as they fell in love. This story has a passionate romance, dark secrets and a mystery that needs to be solved. The secondary characters were interesting and well defined. I wanted to know more about them. I would love to learn about Loul, Jordan's brother as he starts his own journey. The setting was perfect as was the paranormal element. I could picture the swirling mists and the magic that surrounded Aurelie. I wanted the lovers to find their happiness. Meg Hennessy had me caught in her spell.Tags : Dark Secrets, Deep Bayous (Secrets of the Bayous Book 1) - Kindle edition by Meg Hennessy. Dark Secrets Deep Bayous Secrets of the Bayous Book 1 edition by Meg Hennessy Romance eBooks Reviews
This author knows her stuff! What an amazing historical journey this book takes you on! I love a book that not only captures you with a gripping story, but also takes you back in time and teaches you something you didn't know before! I'm also a sucker for the deep south and handsome, strapping pirates, this book has it all. The author of this book clearly has done her research to make that happen. This is one of those books that you stay up too late reading, when your eyes are tired, but you don't care because you just HAVE to read ONE MORE chapter and another and another until you might as well just finish it! Can't wait for the second book, I hope it will be coming out soon!
I am not a romance book reader but came across this while searching for some books to take with me on my for vacation. I love anything southern and historical. I found this book exactly was what I needed for the long road trip out west. It kept me interested and entertained. This book is exactly what it states it is, a historical romance. It let my imagination run with the characters and envision what the southern genteel families were doing during the 1800s. I loved both characters and thought they were well developed and the story line progressed as it should have. Definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to read a historical romance.
This is not my typical read, and while I was a skeptic when I started, I was quickly sucked in. I love that the author did her research and her story was historically accurate, yet not bogged down with insignificant details. I normally find it difficult to find the meaning of phrases when foreign dialogue is used in books, but not here. While I have no knowledge of French, I was able to figure out the meaning of all the French used. I had no knowledge of "placage" before reading this book. It was a fun new topic for me and I spent time online reading about the history behind the word and practice, and reading into the the bayou of New Orleans in that time period. While reading the book, I could see why characters made certain decisions and didn't find myself wondering why Meg Hennessy had taken the story in specific directions. I feel like there is more to this story and hope to read what happens next in their adventure.
I was immediately hooked by the lush and evocative writing in this book. The setting and setup were both unique (I never heard of the placage before reading this book), the historical details were well-researched, and I could almost feel the steamy Louisiana air sliding over my skin as I settled in for a good story. The social issues of the time were handled with a delicate touch. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!
I really liked this book. I read a lot of romance, so my standards are high, and this book was one of those that I love and hate for keeping me up reading late into the night.
Dark Secrets. Deep Bayous is set in the early 1800s in New Orleans and the surrounding area. The hero, Jordan Kincaid, is a white planter (or at least he wants everyone to believe he’s a planter.) Aurelie Fentonot is the mixed race daughter of a wealthy family. He has contracted with her family for her when the novel begins.
Race is important in this time and place because there were laws preventing whites and non-whites from marrying. Because there were so many more white men than white women in the area, however, there developed a contractual type of relationship between a white man and a non-white mistress, called placage, that was similar to marriage and was socially acceptable. This is the arrangement that was made between Jordan and Aurelie at the beginning of the novel.
Then the mysteries begin. Although they were attracted to each other initially, they never would have married by choice. Aurelie would rather have married a man of mixed blood so that she could have a real marriage for love, but she and her family were motivated to try to reclaim Jordan’s land, which used to belong to her family. Jordan would not have married at all, until he was blackmailed by Aurelie’s father who learned that Jordan only poses as a planter to hide his true identity as a pirate. Of course this is a romance novel, so you can rest assured that he has good reasons for his criminal behavior.
There are so many good things about this book. I love the characters, who are intelligent and passionate. I love the attention to detail, for example the intricacies of navigating on rough seas while engaged in a naval battle. I loved the unusual time period. I don’t know much New Orleans in the 1800s, so I was shocked when I started reading about placage, and also fascinated. When I was done reading the novel I immediately went to the Internet to learn more, because--wow. And most of all I loved the atmosphere of the book. The author uses language beautifully to draw you into a strange and mysterious time and place with its own set of rules.
This was a terrific novel, fast-paced, interesting, and very sexy. It's one that I'm likely to remember. And I’m impatient for the next book in the series. I really, really hope the author is a fast writer.
